Cool Sightings Of The Week:We saw a crazy mourning dove this week! So, there I was looking out the window along with Pigpen the cat, when, suddenly, a mourning dove flew right up to us and began hitting the window. The dove was just hovering there and trying to land on the small windowsill or maybe the lip of the storm window. Pigpen was getting very excited, her head bobbing up and down and making funny sounds the whole time as the dove kept banging into the window. This went on for quite a few seconds until Pigpen couldn't take it any more and she swatted at the big dove to make it fly away. Which it did.
Also this week, while out driving the roads of Hunterdon county, I ran into a flock of European starlings. Well, not literally, but almost. I could see a bunch of birds in a field up ahead of my truck and was just deciding that they were starlings, when, suddenly, there was a big wave of hundreds, maybe even a thousand of them, and they were crossing the road right in front of my truck! I honked the horn a few times to keep them at a distance and that seemed to help, but it happened at least three times again as I continued down the same road and the seemingly endless flock crossed back and forth between farm fields. It's an amazing thing to see so many birds move in tandem as if they're somehow connected.
Our first real snowfall of winter has been replaced by rain today, but catching sight of a crazy mourning dove at the window this week and driving through a wave of starlings was very cool!
