Cool sightings of the week:
Yesterday's return to temps in the seventies was enough to bring another frog out from its hiding spot in the pond. I walked past yesterday morning and found a very small frog nestled on a cool moss-covered rock in the upper part of the pond. By mid-afternoon the big bullfrog was on its favorite rock in the lower section of the pond.

A quick lesson in frog multiplication, one big frog in the lower pond plus one very small frog in the upper pond means that the pond is giving off new frogs already this year. I figured the big one to be a survivor from last year, but the little one must have just matured into a frog, perhaps it was still leftover from last year's tadpoles. That would would help to explain why dozens of tadpoles that were placed in the pond last season turned into only a few visible frogs

Either way, discovering life thriving in the backyard so early in the spring season and spotting a young frog staking out it's territory in the mossy abyss at the top of the pond was very cool!
