Cool sightings of the week:The Carolina chickadees have been unusually active in the backyard recently. In fact, a pair was seen nearby last Sunday while filling the bird feeders. They were still close by after a few minutes so I decided to watch and see what they were up to. The one chickadee was moving around the old-style water pump near the garage door and the other was perched in the norway spruce just a few feet away. It seemed that the chickadee was very interested in the water pump as it flitted about and began to explore the different parts. I had a crazy thought that the birds might be living inside the pump and wondered if that would work when, suddenly, the little Carolina chickadee stuck his head inside the top of the pump and disappeared! They were living inside the pump, after all. I hoped it would make a good home for them to raise their young then grabbed my camera, snapped some shots, and put a bunch in the Cool Sightings photo gallery at BackyardTV.com so you could see them , too. It was very cool!
