April Fool's Day, 2011 - 2

Cool Sightings Of The Week:
A gathering of mourning doves was observed this past Wednesday afternoon. Several pairs of the doves were spotted on the ground around the feeders, but they were just kind of sitting still in their respective pairs, not doing much at all, and I wondered if I'd ever seen them gathered like this before. Eventually a few of the doves began to peck at the ground in search of food. Suddenly, in the stillness, one mourning dove broke from the pack and walked slowly away, heading for the pond. It's funny to see birds walk more than a few feet when they could so easily fly from one spot to the next. Time passed and the dove eventually made it's way to the pond where it climbed up the rocks and got a drink for itself before foraging for food on the ground in that area. Soon, the other doves walked across the lawn and joined their friend near the pond.

Also this week, while sitting in the garage looking out at the feeders, I got to spend a little time hanging out with the dark-eyed juncos. Seems they were comfortable with my close proximity more than any of the other birds, so we enjoyed each other's company for a few minutes before I closed the garage door and went inside so the other birds might return.

Spring is arriving slowly this year, but catching a gathering of doves and getting to spend a bit of time hanging out with the dark-eyed juncos this week was very cool!
