Cool Sighting Of The Week:
Happened last Sunday afternoon, while watching the birds from the bedroom window, when a bright blue indigo bunting was spotted gathering food from the wildflowers near the bird feeders. A regular sighing in years past, the indigo bunting hasn't been seen in this backyard for many years, since I stopped using millet seed in the feeders. Upon closer examination of the wildflowers where the indigo bunting was seen, I noticed there were a bunch of spit-bugs on the wildflowers and wondered if that was what the bird was feeding on. If so, that's a good job the little bunting was doing. The male indigo bunting is deep blue overall with a dark gray conical bill. The female is extremely plain brown, with faint streaking and is very difficult to identify.

So, if you see a bird that looks like a very plain finch or sparrow, keep an eye out for the blue of the male indigo bunting, he might not be far away. Either way, getting to see the indigo bunting in the backyard again this past week was very, very cool!
