Cool sightings of the week:A couple... I had a close encounter with an Eastern Goldfinch last Sunday afternoon while filling the bird feeders. The state bird of New Jersey, the goldfinch prefers thistle seed and this female kept an eye on me, but remained steadfastly perched on her thistle feeder as I reached and filled the other feeders just inches from the one that she was on. I watched the same goldfinch later that day, or maybe it was a different one, it was moving about the pond trying to find a good way to drink from the waterfall, just a few feet in front of me. Also this week, while approaching the pond after dark, a bullfrog was seen to jump quickly into the depths of the water as my flashlight found it briefly. I don't get to see the frog very often and can't blame it for being secretive, what with all of the bird action during the day. Either way, having a close encounter with a goldfinch and catching a glimpse of an elusive and stealthy bullfrog in the pond this week was very cool!
