The first measurable snow of the season began falling very lightly last Saturday afternoon. It was supposed to start as rain, but came as snow here on the mountain and quickly began falling more heavily with big fluffy snowflakes. I snapped some pics and cuddled up by the heater in the garage for a few minutes to watch the backyard action. All of the usual feathered friends were out during the storm. The red-tailed hawk made a backyard fly-by and a bright red northern cardinal was easily spotted in a snowy bush. Meanwhile, I awoke Sunday to find the backyard blanketed in the season's glory. The snow-covered landscape had created a winter wonderland which was perfectly accented by the few icicles hanging from the roof. Child-like thoughts of gift-filled Christmas mornings suddenly filled my mind as the scene brought back hopeful memories of my youth.Backyard Tip of the week:
Try to get outside during the changing seasons if you have a chance. See if you can't stir up some pleasant memories of your own, however distant they may be. A stand of snow-capped trees might remind you of a place you once visited. Maybe a certain winter bird call will bring you back in time as the long forgotten song fills your mind with thoughts of a favorite person you once knew. Perhaps the sight of a pine cone lying on the ground will trigger a similar vision of your own, from years gone by, when your days were occupied with nothing more challenging than sleigh riding, snowball fights and other frivolous joys. Either way, try to get outside as fall becomes winter this year to see and to hear the many gifts which nature has to offer you as a reminder of your own special life. Try it, you're sure to love it!
