Cool sightings of the week:
The first big snowfall of the season arrived last Saturday much to my delight. Snowstorms are great for multiplying the number of birds visiting the backyard as the bird's need for food increases to make sure they have enough energy to keep themselves warm through the cold winter nights. All of the birds seemed to love the paths I shoveled between the feeders. Sparrows and juncos, galore! Need 'em, we've got plenty more. At least 30 juncos were seen at the same time. Over a hundred different songbirds were spotted in the yard and they kept coming throughout the week. Cardinals formed groups in spite of their usual need for space from each other. Chickadees, finches, and woodpeckers fed busily at the many feeders. Sparrows and juncos crossed the yard looking like tiny workers as they climbed up and over the huge mounds of snow. A sprig of last season's wildflowers poking through the snow provided much needed landing territory for the smaller ground feeding avian visitors as blue-jays and crows eagerly consumed peanuts and sunflower seed directly from the feeders. A nuthatch and a titmouse were seen sharing a spot together on the small peanut feeder and several pairs of tufted titmice were seen with their crown feathers all perky in the cold weather. Wow, what a white Christmas! Catching sight of a peaceful bird frenzy during the snowstorm this week was very cool!
