Cool Sightings Of The Week:I picked up a new songbird feeder recently, just to hold the birds over until I get time to repair the old one that was broken by the bear last month. The new songbird feeder holds sunflower seed and offers four ports for the birds to land on. Ingeniously designed, the ports are made to drop straight down and close off access to the seed if a squirrel tries to feed there. I haven't yet seen any squirrels being ejected from the cool new feeder, but the birds are beginning to get the hang of it. Earlier this week, I noticed that some finches had found it, and just this morning, a tufted titmouse was spotted taking advantage of the new feeder.
Also this week, while out driving around the back roads of Hunterdon county, a pheasant flew right past the front of my car, seeming to show off it's lovely flight pattern just for me. The pheasant crossed my path, then came to rest in a field at the side of the road. I quickly pulled the car over to get a better look and to make some notes, when, suddenly, two hunters drove past on the way home from their day in the fields. I'd just passed them on the road a few hundred feet back as they were packing up their trucks. Well, I said to the pheasant, it looks like today is your lucky day! I wished the handsome bird continued good fortune and drove away.
Autumn is holding fast today, as temps have returned to a more seasonal level. Finding a few birds using the new songbird feeder and catching sight of such a beautiful pheasant while out driving this week was very cool!
