Cool sightings of the week:
The backyard was found to be covered in winter's white beauty during at least two significant storms in the past week. The first arrived late Friday evening and deposited at least eight inches of powdery snow. After some modest sunlight on Tuesday, the previous snow was found to be quite soft and malleable, indeed it was the perfect snowball snow. Or, as the case turned out to be, it was also the perfect type of snow with which to build a snowman! So, I did just that. Along with a friend, I spent a bit of time reveling in childlike frivolous creativity while frolicking in the snow and building a snowman! And what a nice snowman it was! About five feet tall and quite large around the mid-section, it looked more than welcoming with it's friendly smile, a pair of brazil nuts for eyes and a snoz that even Jimmy Durante would stop to look twice at! Decorated with a soft brimmed hat and blue checkered scarf our snowman looked quite dapper and soon found the name, Fred.

As if by magic, Tuesday evening's snow began to fall lightly as we stood admiring our cool new friend. In fact, Fred looked so cool that it seemed like he might come to life if only we knew just the right words to say. Alas, we contented ourselves to bid Fred well and to call it a night.

Being a snowman, Fred makes friends fast. By the next morning, many of the backyard birds were landing on his upraised stick arms and even on his hat, which looked funny, but Fred didn't seem to mind as juncos, sparrows, blue-jays and even a few cardinals used him to rest on or to position themselves while flying between feeders. Well, what do you know, Fred the snowman was seemingly alive indeed, and he had a lot of new friends to prove his individual significance and worth. Either way, getting a chance to enjoy a few hours of fun during winter's glory and making a new pretend friend this week was very cool!
