Cool sightings of the week:
A couple... an unusually considerate blue-jay was spotted near the small peanut feeder this past Monday morning. Perched on the hook that the feeder hangs from, the blue-jay stayed in place for some time as other birds fed on peanuts below. Seeming to watch for it's own turn, the blue-jay waited patiently as woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even other blue-jays came to eat.

With each new bird's arrival, my hopes were raised further that this one, considerate blue-jay would get it's turn to eat. Suddenly, there was a brief ruckus and all of the birds flew away. A few moments later a blue-jay appeared and hastily grabbed peanuts before flying off. I comforted myself by thinking it was the same blue-jay who didn't get it's turn.

Also this week, the resident Carolina wren was spotted eating peanuts from the feeder. Typically a ground feeding bird, this was not an ordinary sighting, but it was not too unusual, considering the season and shortage of natural foods for the bird. The little Carolina wren was back the next day, this time on top of the peanut feeder. I could see it from the bedroom window as a nuthatch below took the very last peanut that was left in the feeder. Realizing that the feeder was now empty, the wren flew off to a crevice in the willow tree. I hurried out to re-fill the peanuts and hoped the wren would return.

Either way, catching sight of both the Carolina wren and such a friendly blue-jay at the peanut feeder this week was very cool!
