Halloween, 2008
A squirrel was seen running through the yard with an ear of corn on Monday. I used to think the empty corn cobs had washed over from the neighbor's farm. This struck me as funny and I had to laugh at myself as I realized that having nine acres of corn right next door might entice the squirrels to go and grab some of it. About a hundred Canada geese were seen passing above the backyard on Sunday, causing a bit of a stir with all of their honking. A hot air balloon was also spotted this week. This occurred at about 5:00 last night and the air temperature at ground level was 45 degrees. It must cold in that balloon.Backyard Halloween question of the week:
Q - What do birds give out on Halloween night? A - Just some tweets...
Backyard tip of the week:
Do as the birds do this Halloween night and give out more tweets than tricks. You're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, dark-eyed juncos, mourning doves and chipping sparrows. Carolina wrens, house wrens, eastern goldfinches, house finches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, white-breasted nuthatches, the tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, blue-jays, American crows, a single common grackle, a red squirrel, some grey squirrels, a couple of different skunks and some chipmunks, too.
Cool sightings of the week:
The dark-eyed juncos are back! Look for these happy little grey and white visitors on the ground near your bird feeders through the fall and winter. Often seen kicking backward to find seed on the ground, the dark-eyed junco may even visit certain feeders. Also seen this week, our first order came through from the BackyardTV.com online store!!! Certain parts of the website are still being developed and the credit card processing for the store is one of them. Currently, the only way to make a payment is to send a check for any items purchased. Either way, you could have heard me hootin' and hollerin' at the computer this week when that order came through. It was very cool!
