Cool sightings of the week:I found myself sitting outside on a frigid day this week. Still warm from doing chores, the sub-zero temps actually felt comfortable as I took a few minutes to cool off. I sat in plain view and within a very short amount of time all of the birds returned to the feeders. It's funny how sometimes, the backyard birds seem to appreciate my presence in the yard and use the feeders more because of it. Maybe they feel safe from any potential predators, I'm not sure. Either way, the yard was suddenly alive and full of many different songbirds snacking on birdseed and flying to and fro. Juncos, finches and sparrows were seemingly light and easily cooperative when joined by other larger birds in any particular area. Chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers fed easily near several pairs of cardinals and none of them seemed to mind my watching. A tufted titmouse even landed on the water pump handle and glanced my way before flying off to grab a peanut. Wow, Happy New Year to me! Getting to enjoy some comfortable time on a very chilly day with my favorite backyard birds so close-by this week was very cool!
