Cool sightings of the week:
A couple... The birds came in great numbers ahead of Sunday's rain storm. I saw a female cardinal taking peanuts from the small feeder, a first ever sighting there. The crows and starlings also stopped by and seemed to enjoy some leftover bread scraps. Before long, bread crumbs were strewn through the backyard, reminding me of a scene from Hansel & Gretel. At least a dozen starlings were counted on the big peanut feeder at the same time, bringing thoughts of Alfred Hitchcock to mind. Also, on Wednesday evening the usual skunk was seen foraging on the ground for whatever spilled birdseed it could find to eat, but this time the skunk had a very unusual companion. There, moving around and foraging within a breath's distance of the skunk was an opossum! How very strange, I don't know if they've ever been spotted together before. Either way, experiencing a brief Hitchcock-like bird frenzy and catching a moment of seeming brotherhood and friendship between the neighborhood skunk and opossum this week was very cool!
