With sunny warm days and cool evenings such as we've had recently, I find myself wishing that I could spend every waking moment outside so as not to miss a moment of this special time of the summer. The mimosa trees came into bloom this past week and their sweet fragrance was noticed wafting in through the screen door just last night. The milkweed plants are in bloom as well and their fragrance has been found to be equally intoxicating. Meanwhile, the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. Sunrise occurred in the backyard this morning at 5:38, sunset will arrive at 8:32 this evening. Losing 6 minutes this week, we're still enjoying almost 15 hours of heavenly sunlight each day!
Backyard Tip of the week:
Try to catch a sunrise or sunset this summer if you have a chance. Bring along your favorite beverage or other treat and maybe a friend. Just go outside and relax for twenty or thirty minutes as you take in the myriad of unique colors and enjoy nature's daily gift. Try this as a way of actually slowing time. Yes, that's right, almost better than a flux capacitor, as your increased level of pleasure and overall experience of summer grows time just seems to stand still. Try it, you're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including blue-jays, northern cardinals, brown creepers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, song sparrows, tree sparrows, American robins, Carolina wrens and Carolina chickadees. Catbirds, bluebirds, mockingbirds, house finches, goldfinches. Northern flickers, red-bellied and downy woodpeckers. White-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, crows, starlings, grackles, red-winged blackbirds, grey squirrels, red squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, bunnies, a few white-tailed deer, a yard full of fireflies and a red-tailed hawk that was heard to screech as it soared high above the backyard!
