Summer is in full swing this week in the backyard. The Queen Anne's lace has finally bloomed, as have the many sunflowers that are popping up in different spots throughout the yard. The butterfly bushes are blooming as well this week and their fragrance is like that of a fine wine.       Meanwhile, many other wildflowers are growing in the backyard this time of year. In fact, there are bunches of unknown tall exotic looking plants in front of the pond and a chubbly little ground-hog was seen just the other day pulling the plants down to his level to munch on the leaves.
Backyard Tip of the week:
Keep an eye to the sky in your backyard this weekend. Especially if you live in the area of Solberg Airport here, where WDVR is broadcasting live from the Quick Chek Balloon Festival. Take a look up and perhaps you'll see the many unique and colorful hot air balloons that are taking off all weekend long. Try it, you're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including blue-jays, northern cardinals, brown creepers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, song sparrows, tree sparrows, American robins, Carolina wrens and Carolina chickadees. Catbirds, bluebirds, mockingbirds, ruby-throated hummingbirds, house finches, goldfinches. The elusive hairy woodpecker, also red-bellied and downy woodpeckers. Northern flickers, white-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, crows, starlings, grackles, red-winged blackbirds, grey squirrels, red squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, bunnies, ground-hogs, a few white-tailed deer, a few hummingbird moths, a yard full of fireflies, and a sharp-shinned hawk that attacked the feeders right next to the bedroom window then landed on the big house feeder a few feet away!
