Cool Sightings Of The Week:First, a snake was seen in a peculiar spot last Saturday. There's a crack in the cement outside of the garage door and when I looked out I could see a small garter snake with just it's head and neck sticking up through the crack. It was a hot day, so, the snake was probably coming out for a bit of sunlight and warmth.
Also this week, an Eastern Towhee was spotted feeding on the ground below the feeders. With a look similar to the rose-breasted grosbeak, I had to look twice to make sure of what I was seeing. The eastern towhee sports a dark hood and back, contrasting with it's reddish-brown flanks and white belly. A first ever sighting in this backyard, the little towhee was hopping backward and kicking up the ground like it was at a hoe-down or maybe WDVR's own Heartlands Hayride.
Summer surprises still abound in this backyard! Catching sight of an Eastern Towhee and getting to see a small garter snake sticking out it's tongue with it's head swaying back and forth like a cobra this week was very cool!
