Cool sightings of the week:
Do you remember the Carolina chickadees I've been telling you about, the ones who moved into the old style water pump next to the garage? Well, they'd been making a lot of noise the past week or two and, as reported last week, their young could be heard calling from within the pump. I began videotaping sporadically a week ago in hopes of catching a glimpse of the young chickadees when they came out of the pump. As it turns out, last Saturday was to be the young chickadee's debut. I was taking a break inside the house, looking through the bird book, and trying to figure out just what date I might expect to see the fledglings, when I realized that I was hearing a lot of chickadee sounds coming from the chickadee cam. I looked at the tv, then out the window, and could see many small birds in the evergreen tree. The young chickadees had fledged! The tape was rolling, too, which means that we might have even caught them coming out of the pump, though I haven't yet been able to find that part on the tape. Either way, my friend and I grabbed the camera and headed outside to discover the two adults flitting about low on the surrounding trees with three young chickadees who had been inducted into their first lesson at flight school. It was very cool!
