Cool sighting of the week:
Of course, you remember the Carolina chickadees I've been telling you about, the ones who moved into the old style water pump next to the garage. Well, the pump was dark and silent for about a week after the newly fledged chickadees left the nest along with their parents. As the days passed, I wondered where the Chickadees had gone and if they would return. Just last weekend, however, I'm happy to report that the male chickadee was seen near the pump, once again singing his usual song. The bird was then spotted carrying food and disappearing inside the pump. His mate must be in there, I thought, and she must be incubating their second brood of chicks for the season. According to the book, the birds will incubate as many as six eggs for about twelve days and the resulting chicks will fledge from the nest about 15 days after hatching. I wished the chickadees a hearty welcome home and bid them good luck with their new brood. It was very cool!
