June 27, 2008

A rabbit hopped calmly past while I was watching the sunset the other day. A doe followed close behind the bunny and brought childhood stories to mind as I wondered if they might be friends. There was also a close encounter with a chipmunk this week. Carefully making his way through the area where I was working, the friendly little fellow seemed to pass by with no fear.
Backyard tip of the week:
Take a moment this weekend to get a little closer to nature, literally. Just take up a comfortable position in an appropriate backyard spot or other nature area. Keep mostly still and see what comes your way. You'll probably want to stay away from skunks, raccoons, and other potentially troublesome critters, but having your own close encounter with the birds and other wildlife is something you're sure to love!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, American robins, northern flickers, rose-breasted grosbeaks and bluebirds. White-crowned sparrows, Carolina wrens and house wrens, eastern goldfinches and house finches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, white-breasted nuthatches. The tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, blue-jays, American crows, a couple of grey squirrels, a mostly white skunk, some bunnies, and a doe. Also, European starlings, common grackles, red-winged blackbirds, mourning doves, a bullfrog, a toad, chipmunks, a red squirrel, butterflies, and a yard filled with, what must be, thousands of fireflies!
Cool sighting of the week:
Probably the coolest sighting this week was the email I received from the web designer yesterday. We're in the final stages of developing the website and some day very soon BackyardTV.com, a vision of mine that I've been working on for over ten years, will become a reality.  You'll be able to watch the bird feeders all day long and see just what all the talk is about. We'll tell you more about what to expect in the weeks ahead, including an interview with Shep Cohen during the World Of Work this August. Either way, receiving that email yesterday brought me from the realm of hopes and dreams to just within sight of my goal. It was very cool!
This has been The Backyard Report for June 27th, heard only here on WDVR FM and brought to you by BackyardTV.com - coming early this summer!
