Spring arrived to the backyard yesterday and was welcomed with open arms.

Backyard tip of the week:
Watch for local spring colors coming to your backyard soon - in the form of our feathered friends. Eastern goldfinches have already begun to change and bright yellow feathers can be seen shining through their dull winter coats. House finches seem to be getting redder by the day and northern cardinals will soon become a more brilliant shade of red as well.

Take a moment out of your busy day to see what's new and colorful in your yard. You and your new found peace of mind are sure to love it!

Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, dark-eyed juncos, Carolina wrens and American robins. White-throated sparrows, eastern goldfinches and house finches. Red-bellied woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches. The tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, blue-jays, American crows, a couple of grey squirrels and some bunnies. Many European starlings, common grackles, red-winged blackbirds, a few cowbirds and a bunch of mourning doves.

Cool sighting of the week:
A single eastern goldfinch was brave enough to withstand the gusty winds yesterday while perched inside a feeder, eating black oil sunflower for most of the sunset hour. It took some effort for the goldfinch to hold on as his feathers blew, the wind even picked him up once or twice.

His solitude was exaggerated by the occasional glimpses around, was he, perhaps, looking for his friends? Or, was he simply reacting to the sound of the wind through the trees? Either way, yesterday, a lone, molting, male goldfinch helped in welcoming spring to the backyard and it was very cool!
