We've had so much snow here on the mountain this winter that even with the warm temps and bright sunlight of the past week most of the backyard is still covered in white, with only a few spots of ground exposed.

A pair of crows have been seen out front in the driveway quite a bit recently, patrolling for road salt left on the pavement. A mockingbird has been seen eating from the winterberry bush almost daily during the past few weeks. Taking just a few berries per visit, the mockingbird returns the next day for more.

Meanwhile, sunrise occurred in the backyard this morning at 6:29. Sunset will arrive at 5:55 this evening. Having gained just 16 minutes this week, we're up to 11 hours and 26 minutes of snowman melting sunlight each day! In fact, our new snowman Simon from last week is losing mass at an alarming rate and is now so thin that it looks like a profile of his former self as if seen walking away. Well, Simon may not be walking anywhere, but he'll be leaving soon. We're just two weeks and a day away from Spring and I can hardly wait. See ya later, Simon!

Backyard Tip of the week:
Do you have any berry producing trees or bushes in your yard? See if you can spot any cool birds enjoying the fruits of your labor. Many unique and interesting birds may visit your yard for it's natural food choices, but they might not be seen at any bird feeders. Take a walk around your backyard as winter wanes and warm days return. Try it, you're sure to love it!

Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, dark-eyed juncos, blue-jays, brown creepers, song sparrows, tree sparrows, white-throated sparrows. American robins, Carolina wrens, Carolina chickadees, catbirds, mockingbirds, house finches, goldfinches, purple finches, pine siskins. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, yellow-bellied sapsuckers. Northern flickers, white-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, crows, and a squirrel.
