Cool sightings of the week:
A couple, sort of... last Saturday I was outside shoveling snow when I heard the cool and now familiar woika, woika sound of the local pileated woodpecker as it flew over the yard to who knows where. I moved as quickly as possible through the deep snow, trying to get a glimpse of the over-sized woodpecker, but only saw a black spot in the distant sky as I rounded the willow tree.

Also this week, a red-tailed hawk flew closely past my truck while I was driving up the mountain the other day. I'm not sure why the hawk was flying low, but it was so close that it seemed larger than most red-tails or maybe it was just the most well fed. Either way, woika, woika, woika, getting to hear the local pileated woodpecker flying over the backyard  and having a close encounter with a red-tailed hawk this week was very cool!
