The weather was surprisingly warm this week allowing for some outdoor chores to be done.Backyard tip of the week:
If you'd like to get outside, and If you've been thinking about putting up a bird house in your yard, now is a good time to do it. Consider placing your bird house so the entrance faces away from the usual wind direction, but also in a place where it will get plenty of sun. Using a birdhouse with the right size hole for the type of bird you'd like to attract and placing a baffle on the mounting pole will help to keep out predators which will help the birds in their efforts to procreate. Spring migrants will soon be on their way to your yard. Try a new bird house, your feathered friends are sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, dark-eyed juncos, and Carolina wrens. White-throated sparrows, eastern goldfinches, house finches and purple finches. Red-bellied woodpeckers, downy woodpeckers, white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches. The tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, blue-jays, American crows, just a couple of grey squirrels, and a bunny. Many European starlings, common grackles, red-winged blackbirds, and mourning doves.
Cool sighting of the week:
A bunny was seen in the backyard this past Tuesday evening. Just after dark, the brown and white rabbit was foraging on the ground beneath the bird feeders. Spotted when the flood light was turned on, it soon became skittish and hopped further into the backyard. A sure harbinger of the imminent return of spring, a bunny in the yard on a warm winter's eve was cool!
