Cool sighting of the week:
The female rose-breasted grosbeaks are being seen in the backyard again. Thanks to Steve in Bloomsbury for emailing in his report of the same. Steve says that the male cardinals have been chasing away the female grosbeaks when perched at his feeders. The male grosbeaks seem to arrive at the feeders earlier in the spring than the females do. Maybe the females are busy preparing the nests, I'm not sure, but the females are back now and as beautiful as ever.

The male may be more colorful with his black and white and red feathers, but I like the female rose-breasted grosbeak just as much. With her subtle yet interesting brown and white tones, the female grosbeak has a streak just above the eyes that always makes me think of Sophia Loren. And this female is no pushover either, as the male will usually give up his position on the feeder for her.

Spring is moving along nicely as the warm weather returns. Catching sight of the female rose-breasted this week was very cool!
