Cool Sightings Of The Week:One happened last Sunday as our first measurable snow finally arrived. An unexpected event, last Friday's weather forecast made little mention of the storm that brought over thirty inches of snow to parts of our area. The snow began falling in this backyard last Sunday morning and before long the birds were in a feeding frenzy!
Many dozens of backyard birds came to visit during the blowing and drifting snow. Even the dark-eyed juncos, which usually only feed on the ground, were spotted inside one of the feeders on this cold winter's day. When a hawk flew by, all of the birds scattered to the trees and other hiding places, creating an incredible ruckus that was intense, but lasted just a few moments. I journeyed back outside to replenish the seed and the birds began to return.
By Sunday evening, the snow was still falling as a freight train was heard sounding it's horn in the distance. I hoped the conductor and train were safe with such blowing and drifting snow. At times, the winds were so strong that some drifts were as high as two feet or more, even though we received less than a foot of snow here on the mountain. That's OK, less shoveling is a good thing.
Either way, experiencing winter's first big snowfall and getting a chance to sit by the window and watch the feathered frenzy last Sunday was very cool!
