It seems this is the time of the season for those little maple tree seed pods. You've probably seen them as they fall through the air like little helicopters. I was doing a bit of leaf blowing over the weekend and it looked like there was an army of the little helicopters flying around.

Meanwhile, a handful of chickadees were spotted moving about very closely to me the other day. I was watching the frog in the pond and the chickadees were darting from the willow tree trunk to the bird feeder and back, over and over again. Soon, they were joined by a few of the tufted titmice and even a single goldfinch who didn't seem to mind being just a few feet away from me.

Backyard Tip of the week:
See if you can get a little closer to your backyard birds sometime, if you're the kind of person who'd be so inclined to do that type of thing. Just stand or sit calmly with a few sunflower seeds or peanuts held out in your open hand somewhere near your bird feeders or an area of your yard where the birds are usually seen. Wear gloves to be safe and be patient as you wait for your avian friends to discover your offering. Try doing this at a typically busy time of day, or when your feeders are empty, as an easy way to increase your odds of success. You're sure to be delighted when your patience is finally rewarded as a sweet little songbird lands in your hand to accept your offering. Try it, you're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, dark-eyed juncos, blue-jays, brown creepers, song sparrows, tree sparrows.
