Backyard sightings for last week:Including northern cardinals, bluebirds, blue-jays, brown creepers, song sparrows, goldfinches, house finches. Barn swallows, Carolina wrens, Carolina chickadees, catbirds, mockingbirds. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, yellow-bellied sapsuckers, northern flickers, white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, and a few crows. Still a few of the small white butterflies, chipmunks, bunnies, red and grey squirrels, and the bullfrogs are still being seen in the pond, even on some of the cooler evenings.
Cool sightings of the week:
A couple. First, last Saturday morning I caught sight of the red-breasted nuthatch in the fly through feeder while walking past. Not very timid at all, the little red nuthatch didn't seem to mind being so close. On Sunday morning, the favored bird seemed content just a few feet away as it ate from the big house-shaped feeder and watched while I made the rounds filling the bird feeders. A delightful bird, the red-breasted nuthatch is a wonderful and rare sight.
Also this week, just yesterday, three new roses were found blooming on the cloudy last day of September. I stood and watched as the reddish/pink flowers swayed in the Autumn breeze. For an extra measure of pleasure, I even ventured through the remnants of the wildflowers to get close enough to breathe in the flowers' fine fragrance. It was very cool!
