A turkey vulture was spotted flying over the backyard this week. I always like it when the vulture's shadow can be seen crossing the ground as it passes high above. It reminds me of tales of creatures such as the mythical Phoenix and Thunderbirds with their great wing spans in days of old.
Backyard tip of the week:
Take a few moments this weekend or sometime soon maybe to tackle any of those outdoor items that are still left on your to do list. The days are still quite warm this time of year and the forecast looks great for the foreseeable future with daytime highs in the seventies! You're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, rose-breasted grosbeaks, mourning doves and catbirds. Chipping sparrows, white-crowned sparrows, Carolina wrens, house wrens, eastern goldfinches, house finches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, white-breasted nuthatches, the tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, blue-jays, American crows, a couple of grey squirrels, a couple of different skunks, a few deer, some chipmunks, and some bunnies. Also seen were salamanders, still some butterflies, and bats, too.
Cool sighting of the week:
The big peanut feeder was nearly overwhelmed with tufted titmice this week. At least four pairs of the handsome birds were seen taking peanuts. It's funny how they seem to hold the peanut up in the air before flying away. I think they like to show it to me as if to say "look, I got a good one!" Also this week - One of the goldfinch feeders was seen to be regularly occupied with as many as six of the little birds and still several more waiting nearby for a turn. This scenario never lasts for long because another goldfinch will fly in and disrupt the other birds to get a spot at the feeder. Either way, watching so many of the high-spirited little goldfinches play musical chairs at the feeders this week was very cool!
