Cool sightings of the week:
A fairly large (about sixteen inch high) sharp-shinned hawk was spotted in the backyard earlier this week. Seen perched then moving obviously through the branches of the big willow tree above the pond, this sharp-shinned hawk was not waiting around for its picture to be taken as it flew off to the back tree line as soon as my camera found it in the tree. Also this week, last Sunday, I jokingly responded with a whistle to what I thought was a blue-jay imitating a hawk scream. After hearing a seeming response to my whistle I looked up to the sky just in time to see what was indeed an actual red-tailed hawk crossing high above the yard as it travelled easily on the warm air currents, still screeching, perhaps as an expression of its glee. The crisp chill of fall is in the air and the hawks are flying! Catching sight of the red-tailed and sharp-shinned hawks in and above the backyard this week was very cool!
