A mostly white skunk was seen foraging on the ground late last night. There's an area where I'd just cleared away some overgrowth and the backyard birds also seemed to enjoy having access to the new spot of bare ground as a small flock of sparrows came for a visit earlier in the week. I even thought there was a chipping sparrow among the many sparrows, but was unsure as they are typically spring guests to this backyard.Meanwhile, we seem to be at or near our peak fall foliage time. There's still a bunch of green mixed in with the many gold, orange, red and other brilliant leaf colors being seen in our area this week, but I would guess that we're about as close to maximum fall beauty as it gets.
Backyard Tip of the week:
Try to take some time this weekend or one day soon to check out the fall foliage in your neck of the woods. A nice drive in the country may leave you awestruck at the many wide vistas of nature's handiwork. And, with such a varied landscape as we have here in the northeast, you can easily find an out of the way spot to enjoy your exploration and perhaps see some cool trees that you don't usually get a chance to. Try it, you're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, blue-jays, brown creepers, song sparrows, tree sparrows. Carolina wrens and Carolina chickadees, catbirds, mockingbirds, house finches, goldfinches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers. Northern flickers, white-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, crows, grey squirrels, red squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, bunnies, ground-hogs, and still at least one bull frog in the pond.
