A big crow was seen perched atop the peanut feeder this week. Although it is a rather large feeder, the crow made it seem almost small in comparison. Also this week, two more roses opened on the rose bush next to the shed, adding a touch a beauty to a grey cloudy day, and a chipmunk that was seen milling about the pond cheerfully accepted some whole peanuts that I left on a rock for him. In fact, his little head was probably twice its normal size by the time he was done stuffing peanuts in his mouth.Meanwhile, a pair of turkey vultures were spotted taking advantage of the warm air currents and circling high above the backyard on Tuesday... and a rainbow colored hot air balloon was seen passing over the backyard just last night.
Backyard Tip of the week:
Keep an eye on the seed in your bird feeders if it stays in there for a while. Now is a slow time of year at the feeders and it's important to replace any old birdseed before it gets moldy or attract insects, especially if the seed gets wet from the rain. And, of course, remember to clean all feeders periodically. Keeping your bird seed fresh is a good way to ensure that your avian backyard friends stay healthy and well fed. Try it, you're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, blue-jays, brown creepers, song sparrows, tree sparrows. Carolina wrens and Carolina chickadees, catbirds, mockingbirds, ruby-throated hummingbirds, house finches, goldfinches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers. Northern flickers, white-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, and crows. Grey squirrels, red squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, bunnies, ground-hogs, bull frogs, and still plenty of butterflies, spiders and moths.
