Cool sightings of the week:
I heard a cricket very close to me in front of the garage the other night. Now is a great time of year for hearing lots of night sounds in the backyard and this cricket seemed to be so close to me that I looked around to see if I could find it. Within a few moments I caught sight of the cricket nestled in a crack between the slabs of concrete. It stopped chirping briefly as my flashlight found it, but resumed it's song a few seconds later. For the first time in my life I saw a cricket's wings rubbing frantically against each other as the tiny insect created its nighttime music.

Earlier in the week, upon arriving home late from work and trying to catch a bit of bird action while relaxing, several pairs of cardinals were counted at the feeders after the other songbirds had all gone to roost for the night. There was quite a bit of  posturing and chirping going on at the different feeders as cardinals are a bit fussy about sharing a feeder with others of their kind. Either way, I appreciate their late hours even more on days when I have to work late too. Getting home in time for such a cardinal time of the evening and catching sight of a single cricket making its special night song this week was very cool!
