The backyard path between bird feeders has become so overgrown with wildflowers that the usually eight foot wide path has been reduced to just about three feet wide. Meanwhile, last week's new blooms from the rose bush are now just loose petals strewn about the ground among the Queen Anne's Lace. An interesting mix of shapes and colors, the juxtaposition of the rose red against the lacy white is striking.Backyard Tip of the week:
Now is a great time of the year to think about collecting seeds from your backyard plants, depending upon what's growing out there. Are there any favorite wildflowers or other plants that you see pop up each year and have always wished you had more of? The chicory, milkweed, and even the velvetleaf piemaker plants have all gone to seed already in this backyard. See is your local birds will share a few seeds from any similar or otherwise inspiring plants that you can find in your own backyard. Try it, you're sure to love it!
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, blue-jays, brown creepers, song sparrows, tree sparrows. Carolina wrens and Carolina chickadees, catbirds, mockingbirds, house finches, goldfinches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers. Northern flickers, white-breasted nuthatches, tufted titmice, mourning doves, crows, grey squirrels, red squirrels, chipmunks, skunks, bunnies, ground-hogs, bull frogs and still a few of those small white butterflies.
