A bunny was spotted in the driveway this week while munching on leaves from the mimosa tree. Very funny to see, the rabbit would simply pull off a large section of leaves, then sit there eating the little strips, one by one. There was a flurry of downy woodpeckers all at once at the songbird feeder on Saturday and the rose bush has some new blooms on it, too.
Backyard tip of the week:
Keep an eye to the sky this time of year, especially if you live on or near a mountain ridge. The fall migration has already begun for many species of raptors and other birds. You can also catch sight of these migrants during any highway trips you might be taking. Try it during your daily commute as a stress reliever, you're sure to love it.
Backyard sightings for last week:
Including northern cardinals, American robins, northern flickers, rose-breasted grosbeaks, bluebirds and catbirds. Chipping sparrows, white-crowned sparrows, Carolina wrens, house wrens, eastern goldfinches, house finches. Red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, white-breasted nuthatches, a ruby-throated hummingbird, the tufted titmice, black-capped chickadees, blue-jays, American crows, a red squirrel and a few grey squirrels, a mostly white skunk, chipmunks, an opossum and some bunnies. A lone European Starling was seen, as well as a single common grackle. Perhaps they are busy in the corn fields during this time of the year. Also seen were mourning doves, many different kinds of butterflies, hummingbird moths, just a couple of fireflies, and a sky full of bats!
Cool sighting of the week:
Last Sunday, during the big Labor Day Party, all of the guests became excited and began shouting. The backyard sky, as if by magic, was suddenly filled with a bunch of beautiful hot air balloons!! There must have been half a dozen or more of them floating through the air with their bright colors magnificently displayed in the late afternoon sunlight. Everyone thought for sure that I'd arranged for this special treat, but I assured them that I was as surprised as they were. Either way, an impromptu hot air balloon fly-by during last Sunday's party was very cool!
