Cool Sightings Of The Week:
I saw a salamander "close-up" last night. The salamander was spotted near one of the big file cabinets while cleaning up some flood water in the office. I figured it wouldn't last too long inside and began working to get the salamander back outside where it belonged. By blocking it's escape underneath the file cabinet, I was able to encourage the weird looking creature onto a file folder, then slide it right down the paper and into my hand. Unsure of the last time I'd felt a slimy feeling quite like that, I made a quick exit to the outside as the creepy thing squirmed around in my hand. Placing the salamander next to the grass, I quickly ran back to close the door. Wouldn't you know it? When I got back into the office, there was another salamander in the exact same spot! Was it the same one? I don't know, but I couldn't catch this one in time and the slimy little thing got away, probably back under the big file cabinet.

Also this week, five frogs were spotted together in the pond last Saturday. After looking more closely, I counted six frogs, all hanging out and sunning themselves on the rocks, and a chipmunk that kept poking it's head up to see what I was up to. This is the third season since transplanting some tadpoles to the pond from a friend's yard, and it seems to have been a very successful year for the frogs. Walking past the pond a little while later in the day, and noticing the veritable "frog frenzy" that was still going on, another count was made and there were now seven frogs all out on the rocks and having a good time!

Summer is fading, but there's still plenty of creepy crawlers around. Getting to see so many frogs in the pond this week and having a close encounter with a salamander was very cool!
