Ten Things You Can Do:
Vol. #1 - In The Bathroom...
1 - Install a water
saving shower head. Many water saving heads will actually increase the water
pressure you feel as you shower. There are also rain heads which use gravity
to make your shower experience even better.
2 - Install a dimmer switch. Cut energy usage while extending lamp
life. This can be especially helpful for vanity lighting with multiple lamps.
If a dimmer is not possible for you, try replacing existing incandescent
lamps with compact fluorescent lamps which use as much as 75% less energy
while offering the same light output.
3 - If you have a bath exhaust fan and find that it's always being
left on, try installing a timer switch. A fifteen or thirty minute timer
switch will ensure that your bathroom is properly ventilated and will turn
itself off when done.
4 - Use recycled paper products in the bathroom. This small step
can make a big difference in the amount of trees needed for these consumables
and lessen the amount of chemicals going into the water supply.
Remember that you can also recycle that little cardboard tube which the
paper comes on.
5 - Try lowering the temperature setting on your water heater so
the water is not scalding from the tap. Most current water heating systems
can recover quickly enough to replenish in time for your continued hot water
needs. Incremental setting changes to your water heater can have a big impact
toward cutting energy usage.
6 - Try using less water at the sink by reducing
the pressure when washing hands or face. Surprisingly, taking a few moments
longer, can get the job done while using far less water in the process.
7 - Avoid using caustic sprays, chemicals and cleaners when possible
by finding natural alternatives that work as well. A large variety of natural
cleaning and household products are now available in supermarkets. By paying
a few pennies more for products which are better for the environment, you'll
be sending a message that a healthy ecology is important to you and will
determine how you spend your shopping dollars. Let's face it, the reason
there are more of these products available these days is because more of
us are buying them and that's a sure way to help bring about a positive
change in the world.
8 - Take showers instead of baths. The average bath uses thirty gallons
of water while a five minute shower requires just fifteen gallons.
9 - Try using a sink plunger to clear a clogged sink. This is not
a plunger that has not been used anywhere else in the bathroom, shall we
say, but a separate, smaller one which may just do the trick when it comes
to clearing normal drain build-up. For those more stubborn clogs, try using
a bottle of cola instead of the typical drain cleaner. Just let it sit in
there for a while, then rinse with hot water and plunge away!
10 - Consider replacing an older toilet with a newer one which uses
less water. If that's not possible, try putting a brick in the the toilet's
water tank to displace the amount of water stored and used.
